Memento

A memento mori for every Chrome new tab: the days you have left, ticking down live, beside the world's real-time births and deaths

About This Project

Every time you open a new tab, Memento shows you one number: the days you likely have left. It ticks down live, to the millisecond, while you decide what to do next.

Below it, the world keeps moving. A live counter shows how many people were born today and how many have died, in your country or across the whole world. Every one of those deaths was someone who also thought there would be more time. On any day, that number could include you.

It isn't meant to be morbid. It's a memento mori, the old reminder that life is not permanent, placed right where we lose the most minutes. Every second matters. Spend today on work that counts, on the people who count, on something you'll be glad you did.

I built it as a small, fun thing for my own browser, and it became my first published Chrome extension. Answer three questions (birthday, sex and country) and the countdown starts, based on World Bank life expectancy and population data. Nothing leaves your device: no account, no tracking.

Approximate by design. A warning sign, not a diagnosis.
